Tend to Your Talent Garden

This is the first week of the second half of the year. Like most others in management you are probably approaching your mid-year reviews. I’m sure you are thinking that you just got last year’s annual reviews done. The year is flying by and the time you had thought you would spend building up your staff probably hasn’t been as consistent as you had hoped.

Tending to the talent garden has never been more important. With employee disengagement at an all-time high and seasoned employees who deeply understand the business moving on to new opportunities could be a devastating blow to any organization.

Tend to your talent garden using the following 4 C’s:

Competition – healthy competition goes a long way to keeping a team motivated. I frequently change the teams up randomly for different goals that we want to accomplish to reduce a cut-throat environment. Another great way to use competition is to challenge everyone to compete with who they were yesterday rather than the person sitting next to them.

Coaching – there are no great athletes, executives or politicians that haven’t enlisted a coach at one time or another. Coaching helps improve not only productivity but also behaviors. Coaching should be a regularly scheduled exercise and should include both one-way and two-way sessions.

Continuous feedback – this is the greatest gift you can give your employee’s. Continuous feedback is the water that allows your talent garden to grow and flourish. Feedback on both the positive and negative outcomes needs to be immediate, don’t wait weeks after the event to give it.

Compensation – should be fair and just and an accurate reflection of the responsibilities and contributions of the employee. Compensation isn’t sustainable as a motivator but is a key tool that should be reviewed regularly. Additionally, random bonuses for work well done can give a significant boost to morale and continued productivity.

Tending to your talent garden takes effort, focus and dedication. Spending time every day on nurturing your talent garden will help you grow the dream team that you have always wanted.
