Stuck in a Work Rut? How to Break Free and Avoid Burnout

Are you tired of your job? Are the days getting longer despite the daylight getting shorter? Most of the time, we operate on autopilot so much so that we can complete our routine with our eyes closed. The predictability of our day causes us to become stuck in a work rut.

Break free of your work rut by shutting off autopilot and forcing your brain to think differently. Not only will you break free from your rut, but it will also energize you and improve your creativity and problem-solving skills.

Stuck in a Rut – Change Your Morning Routine

Setting your alarm a few minutes earlier changes your autopilot routine. Have your cup of coffee or tea and take a 15-minute walk around the neighborhood. Instead of watching your usual news channel pick a different one. No matter how you start your day, making minor adjustments breaks the autopilot routine from the start.

A Different Commute Shuts Off Autopilot

Keep autopilot off and instead of taking the same commute to work, take the road less traveled. It sounds so simple yet can provide many benefits. When you choose a different way to work, you see new things. You have to pay attention to where you are going because the streets and turns won’t be as familiar. You may even discover a new restaurant or other venues that you haven’t been to before. Pick a different coffee shop to get your morning fix. Play something different on the radio. Whatever you do differently on your way to work will shut off your autopilot.

At the Office

Being stuck in a work rut can be fixed by changing your environment at the office. Sit a different desk for the day. Find space in another department to work for the day or week, especially if your work impacts that department. If you eat lunch on the go at your desk, eat in the break room for the day. Invite a co-worker you usually don’t interact with for coffee. Randomly stop by someone’s office for a 10-minute chat. Every hour or so, take a lap around the parking lot. Any small change to your day at the office will prevent a work rut and shuts off your autopilot.

Being stuck in a work rut is bad for business and detrimental to your career. A work rut causes burnout, reduces creativity, and disrupts your life happiness. Shut off autopilot and break free from being stuck in a work rut by making minor changes to your daily routines.
