Going above and beyond and holding themselves accountable are a few benefits of showing employees you care. Additionally, they are happier in their role which reduces the chances they will leave. Connecting with employees and showing genuine appriciation are the keys to building lasting and loyal teams.

1. Give them time.

You have a lot of responsibilities and it is easy to get wrapped up in your work. Make time to connect with your employees. Show them they matter by knowing who they are at work and at home. Be present in the moment. Give them your time and they will know you have their back.

2. Show them trust.

Empower them to make decisions. Showing trust is essential and sends an important message. Giving them trust tells them their work is good and is at a level where you don’t need to watch over them.

3. Have difficult conversations.

The most powerful thing any leader can do for their people is to give tough feedback that will help them improve. If they have behaviors that will limit their career growth, tell them and help them work on it. Tell them about the consequences of not resolving particular issues.

4. Provide regular, actionable feedback.

In order to bring out the potential in others, leaders need to provide regular feedback. Providing regular, actionable feedback enables people to become more valuable because they will constantly refine, improve and build their skill set. Feedback fuels the kind of performance improvement you need.

5. Remove roadblocks that inhibit their success.

Make sure they have what is needed to accomplish their tasks and the results you are holding them accountable to. Improve processes that slow them down or that create manual work.

6. Help them advance in their career.

Help them advance, even if that means losing them to another department or organization. Preparing them to succeed in their career is essential because it is the greatest demonstration of a great leader.

7. Be honest and honor your commitments.

Truth and transparency will get you respect and earns trust. Demonstrate this by delivering the difficult truths and keeping your word because it shows you care.

8. Recognize them publicly.

Recognizing people publicly because their peers and senior leaders will witness first hand the great work they are doing. Additionally, this will show your commitment to them and their acheiviment.

9. Do random little things.

Send out random acts of gratitude. A handwritten note or a quick email will go a long way. Have a quick call with words of encouragement or walk over to them and simply say thank you. The littlest things can have the biggest impact.
